Fire Lily Wayang (Gloriosa Superba Umbra)
Fire Lily Wayang (Gloriosa Superba Umbra) is a 3D wooden laser-cut artefact reflecting on faith and the ‘shadow self’ – Carl Jung’s concept of the hidden side of one’s being that must be acknowledged to foster growth. This piece bridges spiritual belief with personal struggle.
Placed on the exterior of a church, the artefact embodies the relationship between faith and God. Inside, two projected shadows of curated traditional Indonesian wayang figures and gunungan or kanyon – a symbolic mountain representing the ups and downs of life – illustrate the dialogue between the inner self and the shadow self, inviting viewers to reflect on the interplay of light and darkness within themselves.
Symbolism lies at the heart of the work: Roman Catholic architecture and symbols, abstract patterns, and the fire lily flower come together in a fusion of faith and Indonesian culture. This piece ultimately portrays a journey of resilience, redemption, hope, and growth.
